Agenda
Something A little different
8:30 – 8:45 am a Technology Briefing (Product Based)
CA Mainframe 2.0 – Changing the Way the Mainframe is Managed Forever
Organizations around the world are recommitting to the mainframe as they discover the unique energy, performance, and management advantages it offers in today’s challenging business environment. However, as budgets tighten and experienced mainframe resources become increasingly overextended, IT decision-makers have to aggressively seek more from their mainframes while rigorously controlling ownership costs.
:
- Simplification through Automation
- Managing for the Future
- Releasing Latent Value
- Extending Mainframe Skills
Please attend this product briefing to see the direction CA is taking Mainframe Management.
8:30 – 9:00: AM Greeting
Presentation: Clones are People II
This presentation will describe the possibilities and limitations exploiting Cloned tables in DB2 9 for z/OS.
The new SQL syntax and statements associated with Cloned Tables will be covered by using a live DB2 9 system and real data to illustrate the changes.
Since some Utilities operate on the table/index level and some operate on the tablespace level – the impact on each Utility will be covered as well as the new keywords and commands – again by using a live DB2 environment to illustrate the implications.
Finally - the catalog changes and new parameters will be covered when utilizing Cloned tables.
Presenter:
Gary Furbish has worked in the IT industry for over 33 years. Over the years he has been in computer operations, application development, data analysis, database administration, and database systems programming. He has supported mainframe database systems, such as DB2, IMS, and IDMS as well as distributed database systems such as Teradata and Oracle.
Gary has supported DB2 for Z/OS since 1991, as a DBA and Systems programmer. He has continued focusing on DB2 as a consultant for CA and Platinum Technology since 1994. He has been a manager for the database field support organization at both companies. He currently supports DB2 and distributed mainframe products at CA, a job that includes product training, technical consulting, installation and maintenance for clients worldwide.
Presentation: Using DB2 9 native SQL stored procedures.
Native SQL stored procedures are new for DB2 9. They offer less overhead, are zIIP eligible and are easier to write, in short a win/win/win situation. We will cover the writing and definition of native SQL stored procedures and discuss the new capabilities for versioning these procedures. We will also cover the new SQLFORMAT option and new coding support for Extended GOTO and Nested compound statements. Next we will look at testing and debugging capabilities, including a sample Rexx exec to quickly verify the functionality of the new procedures quickly. Measuring and monitoring resource consumption will be covered. We will then cover deployment commands and migration from existing external SQL procedures to the new native SQL procedures. Finally we will discuss documentation resources that to learn more about native SQL stored procedures.
Presenter:
Robert Andresen is a Technology Specialist with CA. He has been working in performance management and monitoring for several software companies since 1997 and has been supporting mainframe systems since 1976 in various capacities including being a zOS/CICS/DB2 Systems Programmer.. He is a co-author of the IBM Redbook: Linux on IBM @server zSeries and S/390: System Management. He has presented at IDUG, CMG, the IBM zOS Conference and LinuxWorld as well as many local and regional user groups. He holds a degree in Mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is certified as an IBM Certified Database Administrator, DB2 9 for z/OS, an IBM Certified SOA Associate and also is ITIL Foundation Certified. At CA he has been supporting their suite of DB2 for z/OS tools for the past year. His areas of expertise include z/OS, DB2, Oracle, CICS, UNIX/Linux, Windows, Websphere MQ and Networking.
Presentation: : DB2 LUW Index Design, Best Practices, and Case Studies
This technical session is all about Indexes - good indexes, bad indexes, how to create indexes, when to drop indexes, where to create indexes, index options, benefits, drawbacks, hazards, and how-to’s. With DB2 doing so much “automatic tuning”, physical design remains the most critical way for the DBA to directly and substantially influence performance. Case studies will demonstrate the most important index design techniques.
Five Key Bullet Points:
- How Indexes Work
- Access Paths, Costs, and Strategies Illustrated
- Indexes to Avoid
- Desirable Indexes
- Index Design Checklists for Optimum Performance
Scott has said that if you want to bring some snapshot data we could turn this into a working walk through for the group. So Bring some snapshot data and lets finish the day with some hands on education from Scott.
Presenter:
Scott Hayes is President & CEO of DBI, an ISV providing industry leading performance tools for DB2 LUW, an IBM GOLD Consultant and Data Management Champion, the host of The DB2Night Show™ webinar series (www.DB2NightShow.com), a published author in various DB2 related magazines, a frequent speaker at IDUG NA, EU, and AP events, and a regular blogger on DB2 LUW Performance topics (see www.DBISoftware.com/blog/db2_performance.php). Follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/srhayes and twitter.com/db2performance. Scott is one of a handful of DB2 Professionals that can proudly claim they have attended EVERY IDUG North American Conference since IDUG’s inception (DB2/MVS V1.3 was big news back then) and he has the grey hair to prove it.
Snapshot Data walk through with Scott Hayes.
Bring your Snapshot data to have Scott review. |
