Atlanta Db2 Users Group Meeting Notice

Our Next meeting of the group will be in March 2019. Be sure to mark your calendars.

Thank You to everyone who support the Atlanta Db2 Users Group in 2018.

.

Agenda & Presentations are Below.

From the Atlanta Db2 Users Group:  -  2018-12-07

Have you ever wondered about Data Virtualization, have you ever asked your self “why do we spend so much time coping data, why can we just read it in place?” Join us for an architectural look at Data Virtualization and then a demo of Data Virtualization Manger.
If you or developers at your company use Structured Query Language (SQL) then join us for Robert Catterall’s talk on SQL enhancements for Db2 12 for z/OS, all good tips and tricks to improve SQL running against your database.
A very hot topic is a machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). IBM is actively integrating both of these into the Db2 12 for z/OS. Join us for Robert’s session on AI in the Db2 12 for z/OS optimizer and what is changing, come learn more with Robert and the group.

Please mark your calendars for our next meeting meeting of the Atlanta Db2 Users Group on the 7th of December, 2018.  Our agenda is below.

We look forward to seeing you all there.
Rhonda, Susan, Stan, Robert, Rodger and Ted.

December 7th 2018 meeting:
What’s on the Agenda?

Session 1: Enterprise Architecture and DVM
Speaker: Stan Muse – IBM
Description: Presenting a high-level enterprise data architecture model and integrating data virtualization concepts, while outlining how data virtualization can be used to simplify the enterprise data architecture while providing better access to real-time data, and lower costs. He will present IBM’s Data Virtualization Manager, some use cases for DVM, and how it works.

Session2: SQL Enhancements Delivered with Db2 12 for z/OS
Speaker: Robert Catterall
Description: Every version of Db2 for z/OS introduces new SQL-related capabilities, and Db2 12 is no exception. In this session I will describe new SQL features delivered with Db2 12, including temporal enhancements, the native REST interface, the new-and-improved MERGE statement, piece-wise DELETE, result set pagination, advanced triggers, "real" Unicode columns in EBCDIC tables, global variable enhancements, new built-in functions, and more.

Session 3: The Learning Optimizer: An Overview of IBM Db2 AI for z/OS

Speaker: Robert Catterall
Description: Choosing the optimal access path for a query, and doing that in a few milliseconds or less, is no easy task. Even with the most sophisticated query optimizer on the market (IBM invented cost-based SQL optimization), Db2 for z/OS doesn't always choose the best-performing access path for a query. Why? Largely because Db2 has had to act without information - specific to YOUR environment - that is critically important with regard to effective access path selection. Up until now, that is. The brand-new IBM Db2 AI for z/OS is going to fundamentally change the access path selection story in a positive way. This session will provide an overview of what IBM Db2 AI for z/OS is, how it does what it does, and its potential to substantially improve query execution performance in diverse Db2 for z/OS environments.

Session 4: IBM Data Virtualization for the Enterprise
Speaker: Milan Babiak – IBM - Canada

Description: Large amounts of data accumulated over decades on variety of data management system present a wealth of information for your enterprise analytics, but to satisfy current analytics needs - modern APIs, web services, mobile, real-time analytics, security - presents challenges. The concept of Data Virtualization addresses these challenges in three key areas:
1. Data Access Modernization for Business Intelligence and Data Science
2. Real Time Analytics
3. Data Access Optimization and Data Security
They provide a universal, transparent data access for modern application developers, data scientist, financial analysts and many other enterprise data consumers while saving time and ETL costs.
IBM Data Virtualization Manager for z/OS implements this concept on a highly secure, reliable mainframe platform, with the ability to access not only traditional mainframe data - IMS, VSAM, Db2 for z/OS, SMF, RMF, ... , but also non-mainframe data sources - Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Hadoop, and many other data sources
